Audacity 4 Rebuilds the Free Audio Editor From Scratch, Missing Features and All

Audacity’s interface had barely changed since the early 2000s. On September 3, 2026, that ended. Muse Group shipped Audacity 4, the first ground-up rewrite in the free audio editor’s 25-year history, and it looks and behaves like software built this decade instead of during the first iPod era. The clip model is new, the editing is non-destructive, there is a real dark mode, and Windows users finally get official ASIO support.

It is also missing six things Audacity 3 could do. Both of those are true at once, and which one matters more depends entirely on how you actually use the program. Here is the honest version for a working creator.

What actually changed in the editor

Audacity 4 is built on the Qt6 framework instead of the aging wxWidgets toolkit the program relied on for a quarter century. That is not a cosmetic footnote. The old toolkit is why Audacity looked frozen in time and why high-resolution displays rendered it badly. The switch, confirmed by Phoronix, brings native HiDPI rendering, proper light and dark themes, customizable accent colors, and an improved high-contrast mode. If you record on a modern laptop with a sharp screen, the program no longer looks blurry or cramped.

The bigger change is how clips work. In Audacity 4 clips can overlap, you can select and edit several at once, and you can group related clips and move them as a single object. There is a dedicated Split tool that cuts at the playhead across one or more tracks, clip envelopes for volume and fades drawn directly on the clip, and ripple editing so you can decide how deleting a section pushes or holds the rest of the timeline. A new home screen shows local and audio.com cloud projects as visual thumbnails instead of a plain file list, and customizable workspaces let you save a layout for tracking versus one for mixing.

Julia Sazhina, chief product officer at Muse Group, framed the goal plainly: “Audacity has been helping creators record and edit audio for more than 25 years, and our goal with version 4 was to prepare it for the next 25.” Effects got redesigned interfaces, and the program keeps VST3, Audio Unit, and LV2 plug-in support. The project format changed to .aup4, and existing .aup3 files still open and convert.

The quietly significant one for musicians and podcasters recording through an interface: official Windows builds now include ASIO. For years the ASIO SDK’s license was incompatible with Audacity’s, so anyone who wanted low-latency ASIO input had to compile the program from source themselves. That barrier is gone. Low-latency monitoring on Windows now works out of the installer.

Why non-destructive editing is the headline for audio creators

If you have ever trimmed the wrong half-second off a podcast intro, undone it fourteen edits later, and lost everything in between, you already understand why this is the feature that matters. In the old model, trimming a clip threw the audio away. In Audacity 4, trimming is non-destructive: drag the clip edge back out and the audio you cut comes right back. Nothing is gone until you export.

That single change turns Audacity from a program you fight into one you can improvise in. For anyone setting up a first podcast, it removes the specific fear that made beginners over-plan every cut. Overlapping clips plus ripple editing means you can slide a laugh, a cough edit, or an ad read into place and let the timeline reflow instead of manually nudging everything downstream. This is the kind of workflow that used to require a paid editor. Tools like Descript win on transcription-driven editing and speed, and they still do, but for pure waveform work the free option just closed a large part of the gap.

None of it changes the fundamentals of getting clean audio in the first place. A quiet room and decent microphone technique still do more for your sound than any editor feature, and a repair pass in Adobe Podcast Enhance still fixes problems Audacity was never meant to solve. Audacity 4 makes the editing step faster and less punishing. It does not make the recording step optional.

The six things Audacity 4 cannot do yet

This is where the enthusiasm meets the fine print. The rewrite was fundamental enough that several Audacity 3 features did not make the cut for the 4.0 release. Per the launch coverage on Slashdot, the current build drops:

  • Time Tracks for varying speed or pitch over the length of a project.
  • Note and MIDI tracks.
  • The Mixer board view.
  • The Macro Manager and scripting pipe, which power batch processing and automation.
  • VAMP and LADSPA plug-in hosting, two plug-in standards a lot of analysis and effect tools use.
  • Play-at-speed, the transport control for previewing faster or slower without changing pitch.

Muse Group says it plans to bring the missing functionality back in future releases. Commenters on the launch were openly skeptical, and their reasoning is worth hearing: one pointed out that if these features could have been re-added cleanly, they would have shipped in 4.0, because the re-architecture was too fundamental to bolt them onto quickly. Another noted that MuseScore 4, from the same company, made similar restoration promises four years ago that are still unfulfilled.

I would not read that as bad faith, but I would read it as a real timeline. If your workflow leans on any of those six, the safe assumption is that they are gone for the next several months at minimum, not the next several weeks.

The Muse Group question

Muse Group is the company that acquired Audacity in 2021, and if you were paying attention then, you remember why the name carries baggage. The 2021 acquisition set off a genuine backlash over a telemetry plan and privacy-policy language that a lot of longtime users read as data collection bolted onto a beloved free tool. The company walked much of it back. Muse Group also owns MuseScore and grew out of Ultimate Guitar, and version 4 actually borrows its Qt infrastructure from MuseScore 4. The licensing situation has normalized since 2021, and Audacity 4 remains free and open source.

The part I would flag from two decades of running IT operations is the format change, not the corporate history. Moving to .aup4 is the right technical call, and backward import is there, but any time a tool changes its native format you should treat it as a portability event. Save a copy of important projects in the old format before you convert them, and keep your source recordings, the raw WAV or FLAC files, archived outside the project entirely. A project file is a convenience. Your masters are the asset. That rule predates Audacity and it will outlast this version of it.

Who should upgrade today, and who should keep Audacity 3

The migration decision here is the same one I would make for any client rolling out a major version, and it splits cleanly.

Upgrade now if you are a podcaster or a creator doing spoken-word and music editing with the standard toolkit: recording, trimming, arranging clips, applying effects, exporting. For that work Audacity 4 is a clear improvement, and the non-destructive editing alone justifies the switch. Wait, and keep Audacity 3 installed, if you depend on scripting or macros to batch-process files, if you use MIDI or note tracks, if your effects chain relies on VAMP or LADSPA plug-ins, or if play-at-speed is part of how you review takes. Nobody in operations upgrades production the day a rewrite ships, and this is exactly why. Install version 4 alongside version 3, run your actual workflow through it on a copy of a real project, and confirm every step you rely on survives before you retire the old one. Audacity does not force you to choose; the two versions coexist. Use that.

The larger signal is the encouraging one. The most-downloaded free audio editor in the world just proved a 25-year-old open-source project can be rebuilt from the interface up without going paid or going away.
